Pam the Potter

Reverend Pamela Nowell

Potter in the house

I have been a full-time potter for over 30 years—creating, selling, and teaching ceramics has been my life's passion. My journey began unexpectedly when I moved to Portland, Maine, knowing no one. My wonderful landlady, Lisa Bonarrigo, invited me to take a wheel-throwing class she was teaching. I was her first student. Lisa eventually went on to establish what is now Portland Pottery, but at the time, I had no idea how profoundly that single invitation would change my life.

When I opened my first box of clay, inhaled its earthy scent, and felt it squish between my fingers, I was hooked. That day, for the first time in my life, I declared, I want to be a potter. From then on, I never wavered.

I took classes with Lisa until 1986 when I moved to Nashua, NH. There, I continued learning at the Nashua Center for the Arts, seeking out opportunities even when money was tight. I pestered seasoned potters, worked hard, and absorbed everything I could to improve my craft. My passion for clay was unquenchable—I loved the shared struggle of the craft, the satisfaction of a perfectly pulled cylinder, and the sense of community among fellow "dirt lovers."

Over time, I discovered I had a gift for teaching. I began sharing not only the techniques of pottery but also the skills needed to organize shows, promote work, and build a thriving artistic practice. I eventually founded Mudworks Pottery Studio to teach, create, and connect. For me, this journey has always been one of discovery, curiosity, and unfolding opportunities rather than formal education.

I am deeply grateful for the generosity of the artistic communities that have supported and inspired me along the way. I live with a profound love and respect for this world, and my work reflects that. I strive to create pottery that is both beautiful and useful, bringing joy and meaning to the everyday moments of life.

As an artist, I continue to evolve—challenged and delighted by the pursuit of self-expression through clay.
